Over the course of his career, Chris has been involved in some of the Richmond region’s most notable commercial real estate transactions — ranging from straightforward land sales to highly complex, multi-party deals requiring coordination across government agencies, legal teams, and capital partners. His transaction experience spans virtually every commercial property type and deal structure, including land sales involving state and local economic development incentives, historic tax credits, opportunity zones, court-appointed receiverships, bankruptcies, and condemnations.

What Matters

What’s the most rewarding part of helping a client buy, sell, or operate a property?

Many of my clients are small businesses or families. So when they’re selling a commercial property, it might be the one time in their lives doing so. Or if they’re a small business, this might be a monumental step in their goals. Accomplishing the assignment successfully for them is especially rewarding, because it’s more than just a transaction.

What does being a true partner to your clients mean to you?

An investor once said they want the sponsor to contribute a meaningful amount of their own money into a deal, because when times get tough, they want to know they are going to fight for the project. To me, being a partner to our clients means sticking with the deal – and the client – when times get tough.

What makes Commonwealth Commercial different from other firms?

When talking to people about my own investments in real estate, I often say that all the clichés are true – water leaks seem to happen at 3AM or things only break when you’re leaving town for the weekend. The same clichés are true for Commonwealth: the people, the culture, and the principals are what makes us different. It’s simple, and it’s true.

What do you enjoy most about working at Commonwealth?

I’ve worked for global firms, and three-person startups. We are in the sweet spot. We are large enough to have institutional level systems and expertise, yet I see the President of the company walk by my desk several times a week. I have all the tools I could want without the negatives of a conglomerate.
